KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 2 (Bernama) -- Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz says he has spoken with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim about his willingness to continue serving even as his tenure as Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry ends today following the conclusion of his senatorship.
Tengku Zafrul said he remained ready to continue supporting the government in any capacity while awaiting an announcement on his future role.
“I think that was discussed in Cabinet. The Prime Minister briefed Cabinet that that it was my last Cabinet meeting and I think Datuk Fahmi Fadzil (MADANI government spokesperson) correctly stated that there will still be a role for me to support the government.
“I have to admit that I did speak with the Prime Minister before, and I stated that I am willing to support in any capacity to support the government, to support the country. But I don’t know what the Prime Minister has decided,” he told reporters after a dialogue session with the Concorde Club at Wisma Bernama here, today.
The session, “Farewell MITI, Hello New Horizons”, was chaired by Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai. The Concorde Club is an informal group comprising senior editors from local and foreign media organisations.
Yesterday, Anwar said Tengku Zafrul would be appointed to a new position and the matter would be announced on Dec 3.
Fahmi, in a weekly press briefing last Friday said the Prime Minister had indicated Tengku Zafrul would continue serving the government in another capacity.
Tengku Zafrul, who has served as a Senator for two terms since 2020, which is the maximum period allowed, ends his six-year term in the Senate today.
Meanwhile, Tengku Zafrul who is also the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president, has affirmed his commitment to being more involved in badminton moving forward.
He said he intended to continue supporting the national shuttlers, including at upcoming major competitions such as SEA Games 2025 in Thailand this month.
“I will be going to the SEA Games. I'm sending off our badminton players on Thursday to the SEA Games. I'm going on a weekend where I'm confident a few of our players will be in the final for the SEA Games. So that will be on the Dec 14. So I hope to be there,” he added.
