IPOH, Dec 17 (Bernama) -- The establishment of multisensory rooms to support the development of students under the Special Education Integration Programme (PPKI), particularly those with autism, can provide a conducive space to help manage emotions and behaviour, while enhancing students’ focus and responsiveness.

Perak Education Department director Zulkafli Mohamed Mokhtar said such rooms can also make learning more interactive and enjoyable, while stimulating the senses in a controlled and structured environment.

“Research findings also show that multisensory environments help PPKI students improve their communication, cognitive and social skills. This is a very meaningful long-term investment for their future.

“Special education is not merely about providing a special learning space, but a shared commitment to ensure that every student, regardless of ability level, receives fair, appropriate and effective educational opportunities,” he said when speaking at the opening ceremony of the PPKI Multisensory Room at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sungai Rokam here today.

Meanwhile, Pertubuhan Wanita Prihatin Perak chairman Norzita Rabaai, when met by reporters, said the cost of setting up a multisensory room is estimated at between RM30,000 and RM50,000.

She said two integrated multisensory rooms have also been set up at Sekolah Coronation Park and SK Sri Sentosa in the Kinta district.

According to her, the establishment of the multisensory rooms is the result of the organisation’s continuous efforts to raise community awareness of the needs and potential of special education students.

“Through this programme, we want the community to understand that children with autism and students with special needs also have the potential to develop if they are given appropriate space, support and facilities,” she said.

Meanwhile, Gohub Capital Berhad chief executive officer Kenny Tan said the contribution channelled by his company could help support the development of students’ education, particularly by providing more inclusive and quality learning facilities.

He added that the company plans to expand its educational contributions beyond Perak to a nationwide level, with a target of channelling between RM500,000 and RM1 million next year.
