KUALA KRAI, Jan 11 (Bernama) -- Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) is facing an estimated loss of RM100,000 a year following incidents of livestock collisions on the tracks, which not only damage assets but also disrupt the smooth running of train operations on the East Coast.
KTMB's operation control acting general manager, Sadun Abdullah said the incident also affected livestock farmers themselves when their livestock died as a result of being hit.
He said incidents involving livestock roaming along the Gemas-Tumpat route were reported to occur almost every week, with the trend showing an increase in recent times.
"Every obstacle on the track affects the travel schedule, operational safety and quality of service. That is why KTMB appeals for the cooperation of livestock farmers to ensure that their livestock is not left free near the tracks," he told reporters at the KTMB Santuni Pelajar Wilayah Timur Pantai in conjunction with the opening of 2026 school session here today.
To address the recurring issue, KTMB has implemented several measures including advisory services to farmers, safety campaigns and meetings with village heads in the affected areas.
Sadun said KTMB had also expanded public awareness by distributing safety leaflets to nearby suraus and mosques to raise awareness among local residents.
