JAKARTA, Jan 13 (Bernama) -- Indonesia aims to upgrade 60,000 schools this year to hasten improvement to education infrastructure nationwide, said its President Prabowo Subianto.

He said the government also seeks to repair and upgrade all 300,000 schools across the country, and has set a four-year completion target.

“I hope that within four years we can complete the renovation of all schools in Indonesia. We will also improve their quality,” he said at the inauguration ceremony of the Malang campus of SMA Taruna Nusantara in East Java. The event was broadcast live Tuesday on YouTube.

SMA Taruna Nusantara is a national-level boarding senior high school known for its discipline, leadership training, and rigorous academic standards.

The president said education plays a strategic role in national development. Not only is it a means of producing high-quality human resources, he stressed, it is also instrumental for improving public welfare.

He said through the school renovation and quality improvement programme, the government hopes to create proper, safe, and supportive learning environments to enhance the quality of education for all Indonesian.

“Education is an instrument of development, education is an instrument of welfare, education is an instrument of democracy, and education and health are instruments for eliminating poverty,” he added.
