JOHOR BAHRU, Jan 20 (Bernama) -- Students from polytechnics and community colleges described the three sharing sessions, conducted in conjunction with the Closing Ceremony of the National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) Tour Programme 2025 with Polytechnic Students at Sultan Ibrahim Polytechnic (PIS), Pasir Gudang, as relevant to the current digital era.
Most students said the three sessions, comprising sharing on Mobile Journalism (MoJo), fact-checking by Bernama and a Safe Internet Campaign talk by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), offered comprehensive exposure to ethical, prudent and responsible digital media use, particularly among youths active on social media.
Nurulain Syamimi Abdul Halim, 21, a Diploma in Fashion Design student at PIS, said the MoJo session conducted by Bernama Digital Media News Desk officer K. Vishpani helped her gain a clearer understanding of proper camera usage and the fundamentals of effective journalism.
“I learned how to use a camera the right way and create content like a journalist. The session was really helpful and gave me a better understanding of journalism as a career,” said the Semester One student.
Meanwhile, Muhammad Shamil Azri bin Safri, 25, a Diploma in Event Management student at PIS, said the programme was very beneficial, helping him build confidence in communicating and interacting with the public, as well as improving his skills in spotting and evaluating fake news.
He said the sessions gave him valuable exposure and inspired him to take the media industry more seriously, while describing the sharing as meaningful and relevant to the current needs of students.
Another Diploma in Event Management student Muhammad Muaz Naufal bin Abdullah Sani, 19, said he was glad to gain knowledge directly from professional media practitioners, particularly on issues like fake news and internet safety.
“We were exposed to various current issues, such as online fraud and the spread of fake news. I feel this programme is very relevant for students and young people today, who rely heavily on social media and the internet,” he said.
The one-day HAWANA programme, attended by 585 students and lecturers, was held in collaboration with PIS, with MCMC as a strategic partner.
