THAIPUSAM CELEBRATION IN PENANG BOOSTS TOURISM, LOCAL ECONOMY - CHOW

GEORGE TOWN, Jan 31 (Bernama) -- The Thaipusam celebration in Penang contributes to the growth of the state’s tourism sector, boosting the local economy and benefiting small traders, tourism operators and local communities.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that Thaipusam in the state demonstrates that cultural and religious diversity not only strengthens unity among the people in line with the Penang2030 Vision and the Malaysia MADANI concept but also serves as a catalyst for the state’s socio-economic development.

“What’s more, with the introduction of a direct flight between Chennai, India, and Penang, it will not only strengthen cultural ties between the two regions but is also expected to further increase tourist arrivals from India to the state.

“Every year in Penang, the Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Temple becomes the main focal point in commemorating the victory of Lord Murugan over evil, symbolising devotion, self-discipline and spiritual strength in upholding goodness for the benefit of all humanity,” he said in his message in conjunction with the Thaipusam 2026 celebration today.

He said that based on the noble values embodied in the meaning of Thaipusam, these values are worthy of emulation across religions and cultures, and serve as an important foundation in building a harmonious and mutually respectful society.

Chow said Penang has shown that political stability, good governance and inclusive leadership can create a sense of togetherness, where all communities feel included, heard and respected in the state’s development.

He also expressed his appreciation to the temple management, volunteers, security agencies and all parties involved in ensuring the smooth organisation of the Thaipusam celebration each year.

Thaipusam in Penang is unique as it is celebrated a day earlier, known as Chetti Pusam, featuring a procession by the Chettiar community carrying about 90 peacock kavadi and silver chariots. Since 2017, the celebration has been further enhanced with the introduction of a golden chariot carrying the vel of Lord Murugan.

Meanwhile, Chow said the state government remains committed to ensuring continued attention to the development of Tamil National-Type Schools (SJKT) in Penang and welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement of a RM50 million allocation for SJKT maintenance nationwide, which is expected to benefit all 28 SJKTs in the state.

Chow said the state government also plays a proactive role, having channelled RM2.42 million last year to upgrade school infrastructure, provide digital facilities and smart boards, and create a safer and more conducive learning environment, especially for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.

He cited SJKT Ramakrishnan as an example, noting that with continued support from the state government, local leaders and the Penang Hindu Endowments Board, the school has grown from a single block into a well-equipped building serving 339 students.

He added that SJKT Rajaji in Air Itam will soon have its own improved and more comfortable building, benefiting students and supporting long-term human capital development.
