KOTA BHARU, Feb 1 (Bernama) -- An elderly woman in her 70s, known to locals as ‘Moksu Bedak Sejuk’, died in a car accident in front of a Shell petrol station on Jalan Sultan Ibrahim here today.
Kota Bharu district police chief ACP Mohd Azmir Damiri said police received a report at 8.46 am, and the accident is believed to have occurred at about 7.35 am.
He said preliminary investigations found that the driver was travelling from KB Mall towards the Padang Roundabout when the accident took place.
“The victim, Tengku Jariah Hanna Tuan Ismail, was believed to be crossing the road at the time, but due to the close distance, the driver, who was travelling in his rightful lane, was unable to avoid the collision,” he said in a statement today.
Mohd Azmir said the victim was taken to the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead at the Red Zone ward, while the driver was unhurt.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, and police are calling for witnesses to come forward to assist the investigation.
The victim, who had a PwD (Persons with Disabilities) card, was widely known for using bedak sejuk (traditional rice powder) on her face and for her friendly demeanour.
