ALOR SETAR, Feb 11 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Kedah and Perlis has detained two fishing vessels suspected of carrying out an illegal ship-to-ship (STS) oil transfer in waters off Langkawi yesterday.
In a statement today, Kedah and Perlis Maritime Director First Admiral Romli Mustafa said the local and foreign fishing vessels were intercepted at about 9 pm, some 4.5 nautical miles northwest of Tanjung Chinchin.
Two skippers and four Thai crew members aged between 29 and 59 were detained while allegedly conducting the oil transfer.
Romli said the total value of the seizure is estimated at more than RM600,000, with the vessels, seized items and detained crew taken to the Kedah and Perlis Maritime Jetty for further investigation.
Initial inspections found offences under the Supply Control Act 1961, Fisheries Act 1985, Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952, Immigration Act 1959/63 and Customs Act 1967.
He said the agency would not compromise on illegal activities and would continue intensifying patrols in Malaysian waters, and urged the public to report maritime crimes or emergencies via the 999 hotline or the Kedah and Perlis Maritime Operations Centre at 04-966 2750.
