BAYERN REACH GERMAN CUP SEMIFINALS FOR FIRST TIME IN SIX YEARS

BERLIN, Feb 12 (Bernama-dpa) -- Bayern Munich have reached the German Cup semifinals for the first time in six years after a 2-0 win against RB Leipzig on Wednesday, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.

Leipzig thought they had the early lead when Christoph Baumgartner scored in the fourth minute, but his goal was ruled out for offside.

The ball only found the net again in the 64th, this time with Bayern finding the breakthrough thanks to Harry Kane's spot-kick.

The Bavarians were awarded a penalty after Leipzig goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt brought down Josip Stanisic inside the box.

Michael Olise missed a huge chance just two minutes later, but his long ball found Luis Diaz in the 67th as Bayern added a second.

Bayern had not reached the German Cup semifinals since they won cup as part of a treble in the 2019-20 season. Since then, they suffered three second-round eliminations and their best result was a quarterfinals run.

Bayern now join holders VfB Stuttgart, Bayer Leverkusen, and Freiburg in the semifinals.

The draw is on February 22, with the games on April 21 and 22. The final in Berlin takes place on May 23.
