PRESIDENT OF BURUNDI BECOMES CHAIRPERSON OF AFRICAN UNION

PRETORIA, Feb 14 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) — Burundi's President Evariste Ndayishimiye on Saturday officially became the new chairperson of the African Union for 2026, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.

"It is a great honour for me. And in a brotherly spirit, on behalf of the Angolan people and myself personally, I extend my congratulations to President Evariste Ndayishimiye as he assumes the position of Chairperson of the African Union," Angolan President Joao Lourenco said as he handed over the post to his successor.

The handover ceremony took place at the opening of the 39th session of the African Union Assembly in Addis Ababa.

African heads of state and government are gathering in Addis Ababa on Feb 14–15 for the 39th session of the Assembly of the African Union.

During the meetings, African leaders are expected to review reports on South Africa's G20 presidency and the African Union's participation in the G20, appoint 10 members of the African Union Peace and Security Council, hear reports on conflicts in Sudan and South Sudan, and hold a session of the "Committee of Ten" on reform of the UN Security Council.
