KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 24 (Bernama) -- Sarawak is strengthening its global engagement at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2026 to position the state as a forward-looking, investment-ready economy.

Sarawak Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said MWC provides an important platform for the state to engage global partners, strengthen its industrial and digital capabilities, and attract quality investment.

“Sarawak is advancing a development approach that balances economic growth, social well-being and environmental responsibility,” he said in a statement today.

MWC, one of the world’s leading platforms for connectivity and technology, will take place from March 2-5, 2026, at Fira Gran Via, Barcelona, Spain.

According to the statement, Sarawak is seeking collaboration in digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence applications, smart city systems, renewable and hydrogen technologies, advanced manufacturing, semiconductor value chains, research partnerships and technology transfer at MWC Barcelona 2026.

It said Sarawak’s participation at MWC Barcelona 2026 reflects its continued commitment to structured international engagement, technological advancement, and responsible long-term development, aligned with global priorities on digital transformation, economic resilience and climate action.

The state will present its development agenda to 2030 and outline its priority investment areas, with a strong emphasis on practical delivery and sustainable growth at the event.

It said Sarawak’s digital transformation is anchored by strong telecommunications infrastructure and a renewable-energy-led power system, with internet connectivity now exceeding 90 per cent of populated areas, supported by fibre backbone expansion, rural broadband initiatives and satellite connectivity solutions, while 5G ecosystem readiness is progressing through identified rollout sites and industry partnerships.

At the same time, Sarawak is strengthening its capacity to participate more actively in the digital economy through sustained investments in connectivity and digital readiness as artificial intelligence and advanced digital systems reshape global industries.

“The continued expansion of fibre backbone networks, rural broadband and satellite connectivity solutions is ensuring reliable and inclusive connectivity, so that digital transformation delivers tangible benefits to communities across Sarawak while supporting sustainable and long-term growth,” said Julaihi.

The state also aims to create more than 300,000 new jobs by 2030, with human capital development remaining central to long-term competitiveness.

Sarawak aims to achieve a gross domestic product of RM282 billion by 2030, reduce greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 45 per cent relative to 2005 levels, and increase median monthly household income to RM15,000, while advancing inclusive and sustainable development.
