LABUAN, Feb 26 (Bernama) -- Megah Port Management Sdn Bhd (MPM), the operator of Labuan Port, is working closely with the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) to further enhance workplace safety standards for port employees and port users.
MPM chief executive officer Idjal Tahir said the collaboration underscores the company’s commitment to ensuring a safe, compliant, and sustainable working environment in line with national occupational safety and health regulations.
“We place the highest priority on the safety and wellbeing of our employees, contractors, and all port users. Our close engagement with DOSH enables us to continuously review, improve, and strengthen our safety management systems to meet regulatory requirements and industry best practices,” he told Bernama today.
He said the cooperation involves periodic safety audits, risk assessments, compliance reviews, and safety awareness programmes covering cargo handling, heavy equipment operations, and vessel-related activities at the port.
Idjal said Labuan Port plays a strategic role in facilitating both oil and gas cargo as well as consumer and containerised goods, making safety governance a critical component of its daily operations. He added that the port operator has also intensified internal training programmes to ensure workers are well-versed in safe operating procedures, emergency response protocols, and hazard identification.
“Port operations involve heavy machinery, lifting equipment, and continuous vessel movements. It is therefore crucial that we adopt a proactive approach to safety, rather than a reactive one,” he explained.
He noted that MPM remains committed to investing in safety infrastructure, including proper signage, personal protective equipment compliance, traffic flow management within the port area, and regular safety briefings for port stakeholders.
“The enhanced collaboration with DOSH is expected to further strengthen Labuan Port’s reputation as a safe and efficient maritime gateway, supporting the island’s position as a key logistics and oil and gas hub in the region,” he said.
