LABUAN, Feb 27 (Bernama) -- The long-awaited Labuan Sports Complex project is finally blooming, with half of its facilities now completed under the RM21.1 million development that began in December 2021.

The half-completion milestone was witnessed by Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Mordi Bimol during a site visit today.

Mordi said the project had faced various challenges as construction commenced during the COVID-19 pandemic period.

“We (KBS) are aware of the challenges that arose during the early phase of construction, as the project started at the height of the pandemic.

“Despite the difficulties, the Public Works Department (PWD) Labuan had been closely monitoring the progress to ensure full compliance with specifications,” he told Bernama after a briefing from JKR Labuan director Ir. Mohd Faizul Ali Hanapiah at the project site.

He said the Department of Youth and Sports Labuan (JBS) had also been working closely with PWD and the contractors to ensure the smooth implementation of the project.

Among the facilities that have been completed are the Hall and Administration Office Building, tennis courts, street lighting system and badminton courts located in the multipurpose hall.

“We must give credit to JKR, JBS Labuan and the contractors for expediting the project despite the various constraints…the Federal Government is very concerned about the timely completion of this sports development project on the island,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mohd Faizul said the procurement of building materials, most of which had to be sourced from the mainland, as well as manpower shortages, were among the key challenges encountered.

“However, we managed to resolve these issues within our capacity, and the contractors have shown strong commitment towards completing the project,” he said.

He added that other components of the project, including the running track, stadium structure, complex podium and perimeter fencing, are progressing according to schedule.

The Labuan Sports Complex is expected to enhance sports development on the duty-free island, providing improved facilities for youth programmes, community sporting events and talent development initiatives.
