ATHENS, March 8 (Bernama-dpa) — A 5.3-magnitude earthquake shook parts of north-western Greece and the region around the country's popular holiday island of Corfu early on Sunday, reported German Press Agency (dpa).

According to the Geodynamic Institute of the University of Athens, the moderate tremor occurred at around 5.32 am (0332 GMT).

Greek media reported that the quake was also felt in southern Albania.

The epicentre of the quake was on the mainland near the regional capital Ioannina at a depth of about 10 kilometres. Numerous smaller aftershocks followed.

Many residents were jolted awake and ran out of their homes. Local media reported that there were temporary power outages in some regions. There were also minor landslides.

No injuries or significant damage to buildings were initially reported, earthquake expert Efthymios Lekkas said on Greek television ERTNews.
