KUALA LUMPUR, March 11 (Bernama) -- The Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, has called on Muslims in the country to return to the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of the Prophet in facing today's global challenges.

His Royal Highness emphasised that at a time when parts of the world are shaken by conflict and war, Muslims everywhere feel the pain and suffering of the Ummah.

“Many Muslims today face immense hardship, particularly in the Middle East.

“At such a juncture, the most appropriate response for us as believers is to return to the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of the Prophet,” he said in his address at the World #QuranHour programme held at the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Mosque, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) here today.

In his address, the Sultan also reminded Muslims to seek Allah's guidance and protection for Muslims wherever they may be, while striving to strengthen unity within the Ummah.

Commenting on the World #QuranHour initiative, Al-Sultan Abdullah said the hope is not merely for people to recite the Quran, but also to strive to understand the message of the greatest miracle bestowed upon Prophet Muhammad.

His Royal Highness added that the Quran was revealed in Arabic, a language that unites Muslims across nations, cultures and races.

“Regardless of our background, it binds us together as one Ummah,” he said.

Meanwhile, the organiser of the programme and founder of the Warisan Ummah Ikhlas Foundation (WUIF), Datuk Hussamuddin Yaacub, said the Sultan of Pahang's statement was in line with the theme of this year's World #QuranHour Programme, which is 'Shaping Humanity Before Building the World'.

He said the conflicts currently taking place in West Asia showed the failure of leaders in the region to uphold Islamic values as emphasised in the teachings of the Quran.

“What’s happening in the Middle East today shows the failure of leaders there to uphold Islamic values as outlined in the Quran,” he said.

Also present at the programme were Tengku Ampuan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, who is also the Head of the Constitution of IIUM, Deputy Minister of Economy Datuk Indera Mohd Shahar Abdullah, IIUM President Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Hussain and IIUM Rector Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Osman Bakar.
