PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY (Russia), March 14 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- One of the largest volcanoes on the Kamchatka Peninsula emitted a powerful ash plume on Friday evening, said the Kamchatka branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Unified Geophysical Service, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
"On March 13, 2026, at 10.05 pm local time (10:05 am GMT), Shiveluch volcano erupted, sending an ash plume up to 8,000 metres above sea level," the service said on social media platform Telegram.
The ash cloud drifted northeast toward the Bering Sea, according to data provided by volcanologists. The service also said that explosions were heard coming from the volcano, citing eyewitnesses from the village of Klyuchi.
An orange alert is in effect for aviation in the area around the volcano.
Shiveluch volcano is located 50 kilometres (km) north of the village of Klyuchi and about 450 km from the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
