KOTA BHARU, March 23 (Bernama) -- About 7,000 Malaysians and Thais have been recorded using the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex in Rantau Panjang, Pasir Mas during the Aidilfitri festive period.

Rantau Panjang Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) deputy commander Bakri Sulaiman said the number is expected to rise over the next few days as the school holidays are still ongoing.

He said the cross-border movement was driven by Malaysians and Thais taking the opportunity to visit relatives in Kelantan and southern Thailand.

On the eve of Aidilfitri, about 3,500 people crossed the border, while more than 3,000 were recorded on the first day of the celebration, he said.

“We have yet to receive the full figures for yesterday, but movement remains active with travellers entering and exiting via the Rantau Panjang ICQS,” he said when contacted today.

Bakri added that some Malaysians were also taking advantage of the school holidays and festive period to travel to the neighbouring country.

“We will continue to monitor the situation to ensure smooth movement and maintain security at the border entry point,” he said.
