TOURISM SECTOR MUST FOCUS ON EAST ASIAN, REGIONAL MARKETS - PERAK EXCO

TAIPING, March 30 (Bernama) -- The national tourism sector must strategise by focusing on the East Asian market and regional countries to address the impacts of the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

Perak Tourism, Industry, Investment and Corridor Development Committee chairman Loh Sze Yee said this is crucial to ensure the tourism industry remains resilient in tackling global uncertainties.

He said the conflict has impacted tourism industries worldwide, including disrupting the international flight network.

"When a crisis occurs, many flights are not only cancelled due to fuel constraints, but also for safety reasons.

"This results in airline companies being forced to use longer routes, which then increases costs and travel distances,” he told reporters after officiating the interior refurbishment of the Tourist Interpretation Centre and launch of 'Jejak Kedamaian Taiping’ (Taiping Peace Trail) at the Taiping Clock Tower here today.

Loh said Malaysia is in a better position compared to other countries, thanks to its stability and sufficient energy supply.

"If we look at countries around us, some are facing fuel price increases and even supply shortages.

"But in Malaysia, we still enjoy a stable price and sufficient supply, and this is a crucial factor in attracting tourists,” he said.

He said that tourists normally choose destinations that are stable and safe, and as such, Malaysia should seize this opportunity to attract tourists from the affected nations, including high-earning visitors seeking alternative holiday destinations.

In addition, the concept of remote working also paves the way for tourists to live temporarily in Malaysia throughout the crisis period.

In a related development, he said the domestic tourism sector is expected to continue to thrive, with more opting for domestic holidays compared to travelling overseas.
