22/11/2024 02:32 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 22 (Bernama) -- The highly anticipated Sepang 1000KM 2024 (S1K) features a record-breaking grid to a maximum of 90 cars, making it the largest event in history and the finale of this year’s events calendar.

The S1K, starting yesterday until Nov 23, brings together teams from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Singapore, Macau, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and Chinese Taipei to compete in several categories including Malaysian Touring Car, S Production G, S Production V and Vios Enduro.

Sepang International Circuit (SIC) chief executive officer Azhan Shafriman Hanif in a statement said this is a testament to the race's increasing recognition and the circuit’s reputation as a global motorsports destination.

“We are thrilled to welcome the first-ever participation of the Netherlands at the S1K. With competitors from all corners of the world, S1K promises to deliver an exciting chapter in the event's history. I am particularly eager to see if Toyota can repeat its podium success, continuing their impressive streak since 2021,” he said.

Adding to the excitement, the Proton R3 returns to the S1K grid for the first time since 2019, this time competing with the new Proton S70 R3, as the team is fielding two cars with car #81 will be driven by Syafiq Ali, a three-time S1K winner, and Fahrizal Hasan, known for his success in the Sepang 12 Hours endurance race.

Meanwhile, Car #82 will be piloted by Ariff Azmi, an 18-year-old karting and touring car champion and Alister Yoong, the 21-year-old Formula 4 racer and son of former F1 driver, Alex Yoong.

This event is organised by PETRONAS Sepang International Circuit (PETRONAS SIC) with support from the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia (KBS) and sanctioned by the Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM). It also features Hankook as the Official Tyre Distributor for the first time.
