KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 19 (Bernama) -- The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) today confirmed that China’s Shandong Taishan FC are deemed to have withdrawn from the Champions League Elite 2024/25 competition under Article 5.2 of the Competitions Regulations.
The club had earlier informed the AFC of their decision not to report for their East Zone League Stage match against Ulsan HD FC of South Korea, which was scheduled for today.
Following this development, the AFC referred the matter to the relevant committee(s) for further deliberation and a final decision on any necessary actions or sanctions.
“The matter will now be referred to the relevant AFC Committee(s) as appropriate for their decision(s),” the AFC said in a statement today.
The withdrawal is expected to impact the Group Stage standings and the competition’s overall structure.
Malaysian Super League defending champions Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) advanced to the round of 16 after defeating South Korean side Pohang Steelers FC 5-2 in their final group stage match at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri yesterday.
The Southern Tigers finished fourth in the group standings with 14 points and are scheduled to face another South Korean representative, Gwangju FC, in the knockout stage in March. However, there may be changes following Shandong Taishan’s withdrawal.
