20 HIGH-PERFORMANCE SPORTS TO BOOST ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS - AHMAD ZAHID

14/04/2025 03:24 PM

PUTRAJAYA, April 14 (Bernama) – The identification of 20 core High-Performance Sports will drive more efficient sports development involving all sports stakeholders, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The matter was decided at the Cabinet Committee on Sports Development (JKPS) Meeting No. 1/2025 chaired by Ahmad Zahid here today.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also the chairman of the Committee, said the move reflects the MADANI Government’s commitment to enhancing the performance and achievements of athletes at the international level.

The sports involved are aquatics (swimming and diving), weightlifting, badminton, cycling (track), lawn bowls, esports, gymnastics (artistic and rhythmic), hockey, karate, archery, shooting, athletics, sailing, table tennis, sepak takraw, silat, squash, taekwondo, tenpin bowling, and wushu.

"This list will be reviewed every four years according to the Olympic Games cycle," he said in a statement today.

Ahmad Zahid said the selection of core sports was based on several key criteria, such as participation and performance in international competitions, sports management, and athlete development programmes.

"I believe this identification can bring a significant impact to the development of the national sports ecosystem by serving as a main reference for all ministries and agencies in planning programmes, allocating resources, and implementing policies related to sports development," he said.

Ahmad Zahid said the meeting also agreed that the Ministry of National Unity should continue to strengthen efforts to expand sports programmes inclusively across various segments of society.

He said the programmes will highlight the value of togetherness by providing a platform for integration that transcends racial, religious, and socio-economic boundaries.

In addition, Ahmad Zahid said the meeting also discussed the planning of esports programmes for this year by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, as well as the strengthening of the implementation of the One Student One Sport (1M1S) Policy by the Ministry of Education.

"These efforts demonstrate the government’s commitment to discovering new talents across various sports disciplines," he said.
