NILAI, Sept 25 (Bernama) -- A total of 30 national karate athletes will be vying in the 2025 WKF Karate 1 Series A Championship from October 3 to 5 at N9 Arena Nilai, here.
Malaysia Karate Federation (MAKAF) president Datuk Nur Azmi Ahmad said the championship is also the selection arena for athletes to the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand this December and the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.
"From the championship, we will assess the ability of the country's athletes to be selected for the SEA Games later, only the best will be brought to Thailand to ensure consistent performance because karate has never failed to contribute medals to the national contingent," he told reporters here today.
He was met by reporters at a luncheon with the patron of Karate Malaysia and vice president of the Asian Karate Federation (AKF), Tun Dr Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam, in conjunction with the organisation of WKF Karate 1 Series A Championship here, today.
Nur Azmi said that so far, 81 countries have confirmed participating involving 1,080 athletes from all over the world, including from Saudi Arabia, Japan and the United States.
He said that there is no medal target set for the tournament, but rather wanted all athletes to give a great challenge and competition to their opponents.
"This is the best opportunity for them to put up a good fight to ensure success, of course as the host, there should be medals but I am not putting pressure on the athletes. I just want to make sure everything is going very well.
"I don't want to put too much pressure on our athletes, as the president of course I want the best results. However, if the result is not in our favour, we still have two months to improve our mental, tactical and other preparations for the SEA Games," he said.
The WKF K1 Series A is the second-tier tournament in the WKF league structure which gives athletes the opportunity to increase their world ranking points before the World Championships in Paris in October and the Senior World Championships in Egypt in November.
