SEA GAMES: BOXERS READY TO RUMBLE IN THAILAND AFTER SETTING UP TRAINING CAMP IN KAZAKHSTAN

NILAI, Oct 10 (Bernama) -- The national boxing squad will hold a two-week training camp in Kazakhstan starting this Nov 15 as their final preparation for the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, scheduled to take place from Dec 9-20.

President of the Malaysian Boxing Association (PTM), Datuk Mohamad Iruan Zulkefli, said the national boxers involved will not only have the opportunity to train with Kazakh boxers but will also train alongside representatives from two other countries, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

"We are well aware that boxers from Kazakhstan are experienced in competing at the Olympic Games. The momentum of our boxers is also good and they have already reached the 80 percent mark.

"I hope that after the training camp in Kazakhstan, our boxers will be able to deliver their best performance at the 2025 SEA Games," he told reporters after receiving a visit from the 2025 SEA Games Chef-de-Mission (CDM), Nurul Huda Abdullah, here, today.

Mohamad Iruan also announced that handsome rewards await the national boxers if they can end the eight-year gold medal drought at the biennial multi-sport event.

At the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia, the national boxing contingent clinched three bronze medals, contributed by Muhd Abdul Qaiyum Ariffin in the flyweight 51-kilogram (kg) category, Mohd Ridzuan Johari (lightweight 60kg), and Indran Rama Khrisnan in the cruiserweight 86kg category.

Malaysia's last gold medal in boxing at the SEA Games was won by Muhammad Fuad Redzuan in the light flyweight (49kg) category during the 2017 edition in Kuala Lumpur.
