KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 30 (Bernama) -- Rising star Mirabel Ting shone brightest among the Malaysian contingent during the opening round of the Maybank Championship 2025, carding an impressive five-under 67 to finish tied 11th with 10 others at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC), here today.
The 19-year-old from Miri displayed poise and precision throughout the round, sinking six birdies (holes 1, 3, 4, 7, 14 and 18) against a lone bogey on the sixth.
“I had a really good start, I birdied the first hole. I just try to tell myself to stay patient, and you know, if the putt does drop, it will.
“And if it doesn’t, just keep calm and be patient and it will drop. That’s what I did the entire round and I played really well today,” she told reporters, here today.
Having transitioned from an amateur to a professional these year, Mirabel admitted that the early days on tour were far from easy but she has since learned to embrace the grind.
“I did struggle a bit adapting to life as a professional golfer, but I keep telling myself professional golf is hard. You just try to get out there every day and enjoy every second.
“I try not to look at the leaderboard too much, just focus on what I have to do on the golf course and see where it takes me,” she said.
Mirabel, who made her debut at last year’s Maybank Championship as an amateur, said she approaches the event this year with the same mindset but just with a sharper edge.
“Definitely a lot of pressure and expectations, but I kind of put everything aside. At the end of the day, amateur or professional, you’re still hitting the golf ball by yourself. So that doesn’t make a difference. I just always keep that in mind and just played today,” she added.
Known for her composure under pressure, Mirabel credited her growth to learning from past mistakes.
“I have made a lot of mistakes in the past on a golf course. When I started bogeying, I used to get really nervous and here comes the bogey train. I knew I just have to let it go. And which I did today, and had a couple of birdies coming back in, that’s how I played golf today,” she said.
Meanwhile, Liyana Durisic finished as the second-best Malaysian, carding four-under 68 to sit tied 21st, while Kelly Tan, Ashley Lau and Genevieve Ling each posted three-under 69 to finish tied 32nd.
