MALAYSIAN ATHLETES READY TO FACE COLD WEATHER AT TOKYO 2025 DEAFLYMPICS

03/11/2025 10:28 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3 (Bernama) -- The national contingent for the Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics is now in the final phase of preparation, with the main focus placed on health and adaptation to Japan’s cold weather, which is currently around 14 degrees Celsius.

Chef de Mission (CDM) Mohd Yusri Abdul Ghani said all athletes had been reminded to take care of their health and remain focused ahead of their departure early tomorrow morning to the Land of the Rising Sun.

“We are scheduled to depart tomorrow and will arrive in Miyoshi (Tokyo) to undergo training and acclimatisation for two weeks before the Games begin,” he said when met at the handing over of the Jalur Gemilang to the contingent by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh here today.

The multi-sport event, also known as the Summer Deaflympics, will take place from Nov 15 to 26.

Mohd Yusri said that although it was known as the Summer Deaflympics, the colder-than-usual weather in Japan required meticulous preparations, including bringing along medical and physiotherapy teams to ensure the athletes’ health remained in top condition.

“The weather there is quite cold. All athletes have undergone health checks at the National Sports Institute (ISN) and have been confirmed to be in good condition,” he said.

Mohd Yusri said the athletes also displayed high spirits and were not affected by the cold weather factor, as some had previously competed abroad, including in Brazil.

“Some of our athletes have experience competing in previous editions of the Games under cold conditions. So, in Japan, we will do our best to adapt,” he said.

For the record, at the 2022 Deaflympics, the Malaysian team brought home two gold medals through Boon Wei Ying–Foo Zu Tung in the women’s doubles badminton event and the women’s team bowling event.
