MELAKA, Nov 9 (Bernama) -- The Melaka team created their own piece of history by emerging champions of the Tun Ali Cup Sepaktakraw Championship 2025 after defeating Kedah 2-0 in the men’s regu final at the Historical Melaka City Council (MBMB) Basketball Hall in Bukit Serindit here today.
The Melaka trio, comprising national player Mohd Azlan Alias as right striker, Thai import tekong Pongsatorn Phong-Udtha, and left striker Muhammad Zaim Razali, delivered an outstanding performance to win in straight sets 17-14 and 15-12 in 53 minutes.
The victory redeemed Melaka’s disappointment from the past three editions, having previously finished as runners-up in 2022, and earned them their maiden title in this year’s edition.
Kedah, represented by tekong Amar Roslan, Thai striker Loesak Kuram, and Zulhusni Basri, still put up a strong fight despite failing to halt the march of the Melaka Titans.
Kedah had earlier made a surprise run to their first-ever final after eliminating defending champions Kuala Lumpur 2-0 in the quarter-finals and defeating Negeri Sembilan’s golden trio 2-0 in the semi-finals.
As champions, Melaka took home RM15,000 in cash and a trophy presented by Yang Dipertua Negeri Melaka Tun Mohd Ali Rustam, while runners-up Kedah received RM10,000 and a cup.
Melaka also dominated the individual awards, with Pongsatorn named Best Tekong and Mohd Azlan Best Right Striker, while Kedah’s Zulhusni Basri was chosen as Best Left Striker.
In the quadran event introduced for the first time in this edition, the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) emerged champions after defeating Perak 2-0 with scores of 17-16 and 15-9 in the final.
ATM took home RM10,000 and a trophy, while Perak received RM8,000. The third place was shared by the semi-finalists MSSM-KPM and Terengganu, each receiving RM4,000.
In the women’s regu event, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) defeated Sabah 2-0 with identical 15-9, 15-9 scores to pocket RM5,000 and a trophy.
Sabah received RM3,000, while the third place was shared by Selangor and Perak, who each received RM1,000.
