UITM ATHLETES WHO WIN MEDALS IN SEA GAMES WILL BE OFFERED FEE EXEMPTION AS INCENTIVE - VICE CHANCELLOR

SHAH ALAM, Dec 3 (Bernama) -- A total of 42 Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) athletes representing the country at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand will enjoy a tuition fee exemption incentive if they successfully bring home a medal at the prestigious event.

UiTM Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr. Shahrin Sahib @ Sahibuddin said the offer is given as the university’s appreciation for the sacrifices and commitment of the athletes, who comprise 19 men and 25 women, and is also aimed at boosting their morale ahead of the competition scheduled to take place from Dec 9 to 20.

“Today, we witness 44 UiTM athletes, two of whom are university staff, participating in various events with the hope that they can contribute to the nation's success and return safely.

“If they succeed in winning a medal, the university will grant a tuition fee exemption until the completion of their studies, regardless of their level or campus, as a token of appreciation for their effort and talent,” he told reporters after the contingent's send-off ceremony at the Tuanku Canselor Great Hall (DATC) in UiTM Shah Alam today.

Shahrin said the university's support is not limited to the fee exemption incentive but also includes initial financial assistance as pocket money and the provision of training facilities to ensure the athletes' preparation is at an optimal level.

In the meantime, he said UiTM also opens opportunities for potential athletes to become campus residents through an equitable student admission system, regardless of the sport they pursue.

Shahrin said this special entry pathway is accompanied by academic and sports guidance to ensure athletes are capable of competing on the international stage while maintaining academic performance.

“Intensive training, regular monitoring, and guidance through the mentorship programme will continue to be provided to help athletes face sporting challenges and stiff competition in various tournaments, including the SEA Games.

"This commitment to the welfare of athletes, along with academic and financial support, demonstrates UiTM's dedication to producing holistic student-athletes who can contribute to national sports and society,” he said.

Earlier, Shahrin also took time to meet with the 44 UiTM athletes to offer words of encouragement before they depart for Thailand this Saturday.

These UiTM athletes are among the 1,688 members of the Malaysian contingent, including 1,166 athletes representing the country across 50 sports contested, making it the country's largest participation since the 2015 Singapore SEA Games.
