KAZAKHSTAN TO BRING TWO AMUR TIGERS FROM THE NETHERLANDS TO REVIVE ITS POPULATION

19/09/2024 01:10 PM

ASTANA, Sept 18 (Bernama-Kazinform) -- Two Amur tigers will be brought to Kazakhstan from the Netherlands by the end of September to aid in restoring the tiger population, according to the country's national news agency, Kazinform, quoting the Kazakh Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources.

Kazakh Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Yerlan Nyssanbayev, said Kazakhstan has been working to "bring the roar back" by using the Amur tiger, as the Amur and Turanian tigers are closely related.

Amur tigers can adapt to cold temperatures, while the rest live in warm and humid areas.

The Minister said, historically Turanian tigers lived in the forests and rush grounds at the mouth of the Ile River. The last tiger was seen there in 1948.

He also added that four more tigers will be brought to Kazakhstan from Russia next year.

As earlier reported, the project on reintroduction of the Amur tigers to Kazakhstan is currently in the negotiation stage. Russia developed a methodology and is ready to transfer the tigers.
