TWO DEAD IN WILDFIRE IN CORINTHIA, GREECE

30/09/2024 05:54 PM

ATHENS, Sept 30 (Bernama-dpa) -- Two people have died in a major forest fire in mountainous terrain in the Greek region of Corinthia, reported the German news agency (dpa), quoting a local news organisation.

They are said to be two men from the village of Ano Pitsa. They set out to help a friend fight the flames and were subsequently reported missing, according to the television station ERTNews on Monday, citing the fire brigade.

Two bodies were later recovered, but have not yet been officially identified.

Hundreds of firefighters and nine firefighting aircraft have been deployed in the region since Sunday, but their work is being hampered by stormy winds.

Six villages have been evacuated as a precaution.

Due to the heavy smoke, the authorities have urged older and sick people in villages further away to stay in their homes.
