SAN JOSE, California, OCT 3 (Bernama-dpa) -- ChatGPT inventor OpenAI has raised US$6.6 billion in a financing round, reported German news agency dpa.
The money will be used to expand computer capacity and drive forward research into artificial intelligence, the company said in a statement on Wednesday.
OpenAI was valued at around US$150 billion in the financing round. The total valuation is determined by the share of the company that investors receive for their money.
To date, Microsoft has been OpenAI's most important financial backer and incorporates the company's technology into its products.
The firm did not disclose who participated in the financing round. According to earlier media reports, Apple was in talks but dropped out.
The Financial Times, citing informed sources, said OpenAI had asked investors not to invest in competing AI companies such as tech billionaire Elon Musk's xAI.
OpenAI is also competing with other AI companies such as Anthropic and tech giants Google and Facebook owner Meta, which are developing their models.
Training AI models and operating them in huge data centres cost billions. It is still unclear whether the business can pay for itself.
ChatGPT is the chatbot that triggered the hype surrounding artificial intelligence. Such AI programmes are trained with huge amounts of information and can formulate texts at the linguistic level of a human, write software codes and summarise information.
