EXPLOSIONS HEARD IN TEHRAN AS AIR DEFENCES INTERCEPT TARGETS: OFFICIALS

26/10/2024 03:03 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 (Bernama) -- Tehran was rocked by a series of explosions early Saturday as air defence systems engaged unidentified targets over the capital, Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported.

The agency reported that the blasts originated from defensive operations at three sites across Tehran Province, responding to adversarial activity detected in the region’s airspace.

The initial sounds, resembling explosions, were heard around 2.15 am in western Tehran. Later, at approximately 5 am, air defence fire was reported in the eastern and central districts of the capital.

An official from Tehran Province's Air Defence Public Relations confirmed that the explosions were linked to air defence operations at three sites outside the capital.

A security source told IRNA that the air defence systems had successfully intercepted the threats and urged the public to disregard rumours. The source also indicated that some images circulating on social media related to the incident were from previous events.

To date, the exact nature of the targets remains unclear, and there have been no reports of casualties or damage.

Posted on X, IRNA said Imam Khomeini Airport is in a stable condition, and no security incidents have been reported.

“Flights at this airport are operational, the counters are open, and passenger check-in is underway,” it stated.

Meanwhile, Iran's Civil Aviation Organisation announced that flights on all routes have been cancelled "until further notice”, reported Anadolu Agency.
