MAPUTO, Oct 29 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Monday called on the international community to provide continued assistance for stability and peace in the African country following the recent elections, reported Xinhua.
During a meeting with foreign ambassadors held in Maputo, the country's capital, Nyusi underscored the essential role of political stability in Mozambique's development and the importance of preserving peace after the conclusion of the 2024 general elections.
"We urge our international partners to continue supporting Mozambique, especially during times like these, when our nation's stability and security face complex challenges," Nyusi said.
Nyusi strongly condemned recent episodes of violence during protests and demonstrations in the country.
"The recent wave of protests has brought acts of vandalism and direct confrontations with security forces, compelling us to call for restraint and adherence to established norms," said Nyusi.
The president recalled the context of the Oct 9 general elections, mentioning that grievances are being reviewed by the Constitutional Council, the body responsible for validating the election results.
He stressed that efforts to maintain internal stability should be complemented by international support, especially given the country's complex economic and social challenges.
Nyusi expressed solidarity with the families of victims affected by violence related to the electoral process and reaffirmed the government's commitment to investigating and holding those responsible accountable.
"We are ready to cooperate with each of the countries represented here, confident that together we can overcome challenges and pave the way to a future of peace and prosperity," he said.
