MALAYSIA LAMENTS UNSC FAILURE TO IMPOSE GAZA CEASEFIRE

21/11/2024 06:13 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 21 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has expressed deep disappointment over the failure of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to adopt a resolution to impose a ceasefire in Gaza, which would have enabled immediate access to basic services and humanitarian assistance.

According to a Foreign Ministry’s statement on Thursday, Malaysia highlighted that the resolution, supported by most UNSC members, was vetoed on Nov 20, effectively blocking international efforts to address the ongoing crisis in Gaza.

“The exercise of veto frustrates the wish of the international community to end the genocide in Gaza and derails efforts to find a solution to the ongoing crisis,” the statement read.

Malaysia called on the UNSC to fulfil its primary responsibility of maintaining international peace and security, urging decisive action to end the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

It further emphasised the need for the global body to uphold the principles enshrined in the UN Charter and protect the sanctity of international law.

Reiterating its unwavering solidarity with Palestine, Malaysia said it remains committed to finding a peaceful and sustainable solution to the longstanding conflict.

The United States (US) on Wednesday vetoed a UNSC resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza -- the fourth time the Biden administration has blocked a ceasefire resolution since last October, according to international reports

The 15-member council voted on a resolution put forward by 10 non-permanent members that called for an "immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire" in the 13-month conflict and separately demanded the release of hostages.

The current conflict began on October 7, with Israel subsequently overrunning Gaza, leading to widespread displacement among the Palestinian population and the reported deaths of more than 45,000 Palestinians.
