NEW DELHI, Dec 4 (Bernama) -- India’s External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar, met with 27 Indian diaspora journalists from 11 countries on Monday as part of the 79th edition of the Know India Programme (KIP).

During the 45-minute engagement, Dr Jaishankar spoke about the objectives of the KIP and highlighted India’s progress under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He discussed key areas such as India’s digital transformation and the significant role of the Indian diaspora in the country’s cultural and economic development.

“The Indian diaspora is not just a bridge to the world but a vital part of India’s growth story,” he said, underscoring their contributions to their host countries and India alike.

The participants, including from Malaysia (represented by the Malaysian National News Agency or Bernama), Mauritius, Singapore, Indonesia, Fiji, Sri Lanka, Kenya and New Zealand, shared their perspectives on India’s transformation.

Many noted on the country’s evolution from its post-colonial past to a vibrant, modern economy.

The KIP, which runs from Nov 25 to Dec 13, aims to foster a deeper understanding of the Indian heritage and achievements among the diaspora.

This year’s programme features an array of activities, including cultural tours and interactions with policymakers, aimed at strengthening ties with the global Indian community.

The Know India Programme, initiated by the Indian government, serves as a platform for diaspora journalists to experience India’s advancements first-hand and explore opportunities for collaboration in the media sector.

Dr Jaishankar, who was on a two-day official visit to Malaysia in March this year, had said India values Malaysia's upcoming chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025 and it hopes for a clearer direction and more definitive outcomes from ASEAN discussions.

He emphasised the shared cultural heritage and historical ties between India, ASEAN and Malaysia, stressing the need to promote greater tourism, travel and people-to-people interactions.
