BANGKOK, Jan 8 (Bernama) -- A Chinese actor reported missing last week near the Thailand-Myanmar border may have fallen victim to a human trafficking syndicate, according to the Royal Thai Police.
Royal Thai Police Inspector General Thatchai Pitaneelaboot said an initial investigation revealed that the actor, Wang Xing, also known as Xing Xing, was likely coerced into activities linked to a scam syndicate.
He said an initial investigation found that Chinese nationals were involved in Wang's disappearance.
"Wang was located by authorities in Myanmar on Tuesday and safely transported back to Bangkok," Thatchai told a press conference on Tuesday.
Thatchai said police suspect the perpetrators are part of a call centre scam operation after the victim disclosed that he was trained for two days to use a chat program to scam individuals in China.
The inspector general confirmed that Wang is safe and unharmed, expressing gratitude to the Thai public for their assistance in the case.
"Wang initially believed he was coming to Thailand for a casting opportunity, only to discover he was being forced into scamming other Chinese nationals," Thatchai explained.
He said a comprehensive investigation has been launched, as authorities suspect the incident is part of a broader human trafficking network.
Wang was reported missing last Friday in northern Thailand's Tak province, a region bordering Myanmar.
