WASHINGTON, Jan 13 (Bernama-dpa) - Nearly all public schools in the Los Angeles area will reopen on Monday, even as firefighters continue to battle multiple blazes that have killed at least 24 people and destroyed more than 12,000 structures, reported German news agency dpa.
The Los Angeles Unified School District, one of the biggest in the United States, said late Sunday that only seven of its 1,302 schools will remain closed.
Four of them were destroyed by the Palisades fire burning on the west side of Los Angeles. The three others schools are in evacuation zones.
"Conditions have improved for a majority of areas across the Los Angeles region and the district is confident it is safe for students and employees to return to campuses," a statement said.
The decision took into account the status of the containment of the fires, air quality, wind conditions and the status of road closures.
Meanwhile, state universities in Los Angeles are offering online instruction.
Firefighters were preparing for gusts to pick up again in the coming days, exacerbating what officials say could be one of the worst natural disasters in US history.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) warned of "critical fire weather" through to Wednesday.
