JAKARTA, Feb 12 (Bernama) -- Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto hosted Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the Presidential Palace in Bogor on Wednesday for the inaugural High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council (HLSCC) meeting between the two nations.
After a brief welcoming ceremony, the two leaders held a private one-hour meeting to discuss key bilateral issues.
During the HLSCC discussions, the leaders and their delegations focused on strengthening economic, trade, and investment ties, enhancing defence and defence industry cooperation, and deepening security collaboration.
They also explored partnerships in energy security, infrastructure development, and people-centric sectors such as education, health, and disaster management.
The leaders committed to advancing cultural cooperation and deepening both regional and global collaboration.
The meeting culminated in the signing of 12 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) across diverse sectors, including Islamic education, energy and minerals, higher education, health and medicine, defence, trade, agriculture, investment, and downstream industries.
Notable agreements included the establishment of a committee for industrial cooperation, a joint venture to develop drones, and three agreements related to national radio, television, and news agency cooperation between the two countries.
During the joint press conference, Prabowo said that the meeting serves as a key mechanism for the two countries, with both committed to strengthening their partnership for the prosperity of their people and working towards a more peaceful and stable world order.
He stated that Indonesia and Türkiye have pledged to enhance bilateral trade, finalise their Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), expand product exchanges, and strengthen defence and security cooperation, including armed forces training and intelligence sharing.
On international relations, Prabowo reaffirmed that both nations believe the solution to peace in Palestine lies in Palestinian independence through a two-state solution.
“We also support peace in Syria and Ukraine,” he said during the session that was broadcast live via the Presidential Secretariat’s Press, Media, and Information Bureau (BPMI) YouTube channel.
Meanwhile, Erdoğan outlined plans to boost bilateral trade to US$10 billion annually and expand cooperation in sectors like energy, healthcare, and defence through both existing and new projects.
He stressed the importance of enhancing people-to-people connections by broadening scholarship programmes, and cultural exchanges, and expanding collaboration in the tourism sector, focusing on increasing flight connections and promoting tourist destinations.
Erdogan also emphasised Indonesia’s crucial role in strengthening ties with ASEAN, stating, “With the ASEAN Secretariat headquartered in Indonesia, I’m confident that Indonesia will support us in enhancing the dialogue between us and ASEAN.”
