ABBAS SUPPORTS EGYPTIAN-ARAB GAZA RECONSTRUCTION PLAN, REJECTS FORCED DISPLACEMENT

CAIRO, March 4 (Bernama-WAFA) -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has expressed strong support for the Egyptian-Palestinian-Arab plan for the reconstruction of Gaza, stressing that the process must occur without the displacement of Palestinians from their homeland.

He also called on United States (US) President Donald Trump to back these efforts, Palestine News Agency (WAFA) reported.

Speaking at the emergency Arab Summit in Cairo on Tuesday, Abbas warned of the serious threats facing the Palestinian cause, particularly the push for the forced displacement of Palestinians, which he firmly rejected.

He also condemned Israeli policies in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, accusing them of entrenching colonial settlements to undermine the two-state solution and erase Palestinian national aspirations.

In a significant development, Abbas announced the creation of a new vice-presidential position for both the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) and the State of Palestine, vowing to take legal steps to formalise the role.

Outlining his vision for addressing key challenges, he reaffirmed the Palestinian government's role in assuming full responsibility in Gaza, implementing the reconstruction plan, advancing governmental reform, and strengthening national unity.

Abbas also reiterated his commitment to holding general elections, both presidential and legislative, next year, provided that conditions allow for voting in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

He urged all parties to create an environment conducive to free and fair elections.

As part of a broader effort to restructure the Palestinian leadership, Abbas announced plans to revamp key national institutions and bring new leadership into the PLO, the Fatah movement and state institutions.

The Palestinian Central Council is set to convene soon to discuss these reforms.

In a move to promote internal unity, he declared a general amnesty for dismissed Fatah members, aiming to foster cohesion within the movement.

The emergency summit comes at a time of heightened regional tensions and growing international scrutiny over the future of Gaza and the broader Palestinian cause.
