KUALA LUMPUR, March 11 (Bernama) -- The Dutch Ambassador to Malaysia, Jacques Werner, has reaffirmed the Netherlands' commitment to deepening its bilateral relationship with Malaysia, particularly in the areas of trade, sustainability, education and cultural exchange.
Werner emphasised the long-standing historical ties between the two nations, which date back centuries, and acknowledged that the Netherlands is Malaysia’s second-largest trading partner in the European Union.
"We have a rich history together, and our partnership continues to evolve in meaningful ways, particularly in the areas of economic cooperation and environmental sustainability.
"Our cooperation is built on mutual respect and shared interests. We look forward to expanding our engagements in trade, sustainability, and cultural ties. There is so much potential for growth in our bilateral partnership," he said on Bernama TV’s programme ‘The Nation’ on Tuesday.
Werner also highlighted key investments from Dutch multinational corporations and commended Malaysia’s role as an attractive destination for foreign direct investment (FDI), adding that Dutch companies have been investing in Malaysia for decades, notably in sectors such as oil and gas, agriculture, and technology.
However, the ambassador also acknowledged the importance of diversifying economic collaboration beyond traditional industries.
"We are exploring opportunities in green technology, digital innovation, and renewable energy. Malaysia’s transition to sustainable development is an area where the Netherlands can contribute significantly,” he said
Werner stated that a key aspect of Malaysia-Netherlands relations is sustainability, with both countries actively engaging in climate-related projects.
He noted that both nations share concerns about climate change and highlighted the Netherlands' extensive experience in water management, which could be beneficial to Malaysia.
Werner also pointed out that Dutch expertise in flood prevention and sustainable urban planning aligns with Malaysia’s efforts to address climate challenges.
On Malaysia’s palm oil industry, the ambassador said the Netherlands also work closely with Malaysia to ensure compliance of the European Union’s (EU) new regulations on deforestation-free supply chain while supporting the sector.
Beyond economic ties, he said cultural and academic exchanges play a significant role in strengthening bilateral relations, noting that education is another area of cooperation.
He said ongoing initiatives promote Dutch and Malaysian cultures, including art exhibitions and culinary exchanges, and that such interactions foster mutual understanding and appreciation.
