GENEVA, March 27 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Wednesday confirmed that four American soldiers who went missing during a training exercise in Lithuania on Tuesday have died.
“Whilst I was speaking, the news came out about four American soldiers who were killed in an incident in Lithuania,” Rutte told reporters during a press briefing in Warsaw, Anadolu Agency (AA) reported.
Describing the development as “terrible news”, Rutte said the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear.
“Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones,” he added.
Earlier, the Lithuanian Armed Forces reported that four United States soldiers and one tracked vehicle had gone missing during a training exercise in eastern Lithuania on Tuesday.
Lithuanian and allied forces, supported by helicopters, were deployed in the search operation.
