YANGON (Myanmar), March 28 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck 16 km north-northwest of Sagaing, Myanmar, at 06:20:54 GMT on Friday, Xinhua news agency reported according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The epicentre was initially located at 22.01 degrees north latitude and 95.92 degrees east longitude, at a shallow depth of 10 km.
Xinhua reporters in Yangon said strong tremors were felt across the capital, Nay Pyi Taw, and Myanmar's largest city, Yangon.
As of now, the Myanmar government has yet to release official information on the earthquake's magnitude or the extent of damage.
Xinhua's attempts to contact officials in the epicentre region were unsuccessful.
Reports indicated that several buildings in the Mandalay Region collapsed, while multiple roads connecting Mandalay and Yangon were damaged or cut off.
The quake was also felt beyond Myanmar’s borders.
Xinhua reporters in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, and Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, confirmed that strong tremors were experienced.
In Vientiane, buildings taller than three storeys swayed noticeably, causing alarm among residents, especially those in high-rise apartments.
