5.1- MAGNITUDE AFTERSHOCK HITS NORTH OF MANDALAY AMID SERIES OF QUAKES - USGS

30/03/2025 06:52 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, March 30 (Bernama) --  A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck about 27.4 kilometres (17 miles) north of Mandalay, Myanmar, on Sunday afternoon following the powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake that rattled the region two days earlier.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake, which occurred near Myanmar’s second-largest city, came amid a series of aftershocks that affected central Myanmar since the major tremor on Friday.

The USGS noted that the epicentre of the 5.1 magnitude quake was shallow, increasing the likelihood of strong ground shaking.

According to the USGS, another aftershock measuring 4.2 magnitude earlier struck near Shwebo, about 109.4 km (68 miles) northwest of Mandalay, on Sunday morning.

This tremor occurred at a depth of 10 km and was recorded 17 km east of Shwebo in the Sagaing Region.

According to international media reports, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage following the aftershocks.
