NEW DELHI, April 26 (Bernama) -- Iran has offered to mediate in the India-Pakistan row after regional tensions escalated following a terror attack in Indian-administered Kashmir.
India and Pakistan have downgraded diplomatic relations, revoked visas of each other's nationals and suspended some decades-old bilateral agreements after gunmen shot dead 26 people, mostly Indian tourists, in the Jammu and Kashmir region's Pahalgam area on Tuesday.
“India and Pakistan are brotherly neighbours of Iran, enjoying relations rooted in centuries-old cultural and civilizational ties. Like other neighbours, we consider them our foremost priority," Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said on X on Friday.
"Tehran stands ready to use its good offices in Islamabad and New Delhi to forge greater understanding at this difficult time," he said.
The two neighbours have made several tit-for-tat moves, raising fears of a military conflict in South Asia, after New Delhi linked Islamabad to the Kashmir attack.
Pakistan has dismissed India's accusations.
Both India and Pakistan have briefed foreign envoys based in their respective capitals on the latest situation.
The UN Secretary-General's spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, on Thursday appealed to Pakistan and India "to exercise maximum restraint and to ensure that the situation and the developments we've seen do not deteriorate any further."
