KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and Namibia have reaffirmed their strong bilateral ties, with both countries expressing commitment to strengthening trade cooperation through the Global South Cooperation.
In a statement on Thursday, Chargé d'Affaires of Malaysia to Namibia, Datuk Dr Mohamad Rameez Yahaya, said this was conveyed during a courtesy call on Namibia’s new Minister of International Relations and Trade, Ambassador Selma Ashipala-Musavyi, in Windhoek.
“Ambassador Selma also raised the importance of the assistance thus far provided by Malaysia in terms of the drought relief, as well as the technical assistance provided via the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme that has benefited Namibia a lot in enhancing capacity building among the Namibians,” the statement read.
According to Mohamad Rameez, Selma also expressed keen interest in visiting Malaysia to learn from its experience in information technology and the oil and gas sectors.
“She said that her experience as a career diplomat for the past 30 over years made her appreciate Malaysia very much, for Malaysia has always been there to assist the Global South and being the champion for the Palestine Issue in which Namibia is always supporting the inalienable rights and self-determination for a Palestine state,” it said.
Mohamad Rameez also conveyed Malaysia’s warmest congratulations on the recent announcement of Ambassador Selma as Namibia’s new Foreign Minister, whose role has now been expanded to include the international trade portfolio.
The meeting, which lasted 30 minutes, was conducted in a warm and cordial setting.
Their shared academic background as alumni of Keele University in the United Kingdom added a personal dimension to the discussion.
