KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 25 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Humanitarian Aid and Relief (MAHAR) has condemned the United States (US) veto of a Gaza ceasefire at the United Nations (UN) Security Council and urged member states to invoke the “Uniting for Peace” resolution.
It has expressed profound disappointment and grave concern over the latest veto cast on Sept 18.
“This repeated obstruction of a resolution that enjoyed overwhelming international support is a moral failure of the highest order,” said MAHAR President, Jismi Johari, in a statement on Thursday (Sept 25).
The veto blocked a resolution demanding an “immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire” in Gaza, the release of all hostages, and the lifting of all restrictions on humanitarian aid.
The resolution, drafted by the 10 elected non-permanent members of the Security Council, was supported by the remaining 14 members, including all permanent members such as the UK, France, Russia, and China.
“The humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza has reached unfathomable levels. Every veto that prevents an end to the bloodshed and the delivery of life-saving aid is a vote against humanity itself. It is unconscionable that starvation, siege, and collective punishment are allowed to persist.”
He stressed that the Security Council, entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining global peace and security, has been paralysed by the veto power of a single member.
“This is not merely a failure of diplomacy; it is a betrayal of the very principles upon which the UN was founded.”
In response to this paralysis, MAHAR urges all UN member states to invoke the “Uniting for Peace” resolution (General Assembly Resolution 377 A (V)), a crucial mechanism that allows the UN General Assembly to act when the Security Council fails due to a veto deadlock.
“We call upon all nations that uphold justice, human dignity, and international law to convene an Emergency Special Session of the General Assembly,” said Johari.
“By invoking Resolution 377A, the global community can bypass the UNSC veto and deliver a unified message that the genocide in Gaza must end immediately. The world must not allow one nation’s political interest to outweigh humanity’s conscience.”
