WARSAW, Oct 7 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- The District Court in Warsaw on Monday extended the pretrial detention of the Nord Stream bombing suspect by 40 days, according to the Polish Press Agency, reported Xinhua.
Germany has wanted the suspect, a Ukrainian citizen, identified as Volodymyr Z., over his alleged involvement in the explosions.
"The court rejected the prosecutor's request for a 100-day pretrial detention and instead ordered a 40-day term," his lawyer said, adding that the defendant denied any involvement.
The man was detained on Tuesday in Pruszków, about 15 kilometres (km) west of Warsaw, under a European arrest warrant issued by a German court.
The District Court in Warsaw on Wednesday granted the request from the prosecutor's office to detain the suspect for seven days.
Piotr Antoni Skiba, a spokesperson for the Warsaw District Prosecutor's Office, said the court will rule on his possible extradition to Germany within the legally mandated 100-day period.
On September 26, 2022, the Nord Stream pipelines, which transport natural gas from Russia to Europe, were ruptured in a series of explosions beneath the Baltic Sea near Sweden and Denmark.
Sweden, Denmark, and Germany called the incident a deliberate act of sabotage.
