OPENAI INTRODUCES CHATGPT BROWSER ATLAS

SAN JOSE, California, Oct 22 (Bernama-dpa) -- ChatGPT developer OpenAI on Tuesday unveiled its own artificial-intelligence-powered web browser, in a challenge to Google and Apple, reported German news agency dpa. 

The browser, named Atlas, will initially only be available for Apple'sApple's Mac computers, the company said. It is designed to help users complete "tasks without copying and pasting or leaving the page," the company said.

OpenAI said Atlas would integrate the ChatGPT chatbot into website usage, summarising the content of a page or comparing different articles when shopping online. "Your ChatGPT memory is built in, so conversations can draw on past chats and details to help you get new things done," the company added.

Functions that allow ChatGPT to perform tasks independently on behalf of users – such as booking a trip – are reserved for paying OpenAI subscribers.

Google currently provides the world's most widely used web browser with Chrome. Apple's competing software, Safari, has also been in a strong position, especially on iPhones. 

In recent months, other AI companies have also launched their own web browsers.

Launched around three years ago, ChatGPT sparked the current artificial intelligence boom and now has about 800 million weekly users. Despite its popularity, questions remain about the profitability of AI. 

OpenAI and other tech giants, including Facebook parent company Meta, are investing hundreds of billions of dollars in data centres, but it is unclear whether these investments will pay off. Companies are seeking ways to monetise AI capabilities.
