DHAKA, Nov 21 (Bernama-UNB) -- An estimated 5.5-magnitude earthquake jolted Dhaka and several other parts of Bangladesh on Friday morning, United News of Bangladesh (UNB) reported.

The tremor was felt around 10.38 am (0438GMT) and lasted for about a minute, with no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Still, residents in Dhaka rushed out of buildings and homes as the ground shook, seeking safety in the streets.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres (km) below the surface, which is considered very shallow.

The epicentre of the earthquake was 7 km from Ghorashal, according to early reports from the Android Earthquake Alerts System, which also said it was felt in India.

The USGS reported it as 14 km from Narsingdi, about 50 km northeast of the capital Dhaka, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
