SINGAPORE, Dec 4 (Bernama) -- Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has welcomed Malaysia’s decision to formally approve its proposal to establish consulates in Sabah and Sarawak, hailing it as an important step in strengthening ties between the peoples of the two nations.
“Happy that Malaysia has formally agreed to Singapore’s proposal to open consulates in Sabah and Sarawak.
“This will allow Singapore to provide consular services to Singaporeans there, deepen the already robust ties between our peoples,” Wong said during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim after the 12th Annual Leaders’ Retreat, held here, on Thursday.
The matter was first brought up at the leaders’ retreat in Putrajaya last January.
At present, Singapore has two diplomatic missions in Malaysia, its High Commission in Kuala Lumpur and a consulate in Johor Bahru, which began operations in 2009.
