ZELENSKY APPOINTS INTELLIGENCE HEAD BUDANOV AS NEW CHIEF OF STAFF

02/01/2026 10:47 PM

KYIV, Jan 2 (Bernama-dpa) -- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appointed military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov as head of the presidential office, reported German Press Agency (dpa).

Zelensky posted on social media on Friday about a meeting with Budanov, during which he offered him the position.

Budanov previously headed the military intelligence service HUR. Zelensky said that Ukraine must focus more on security issues, the development of its defence and security forces, and diplomatic negotiations.

The presidential office will give priority to these tasks, Zelensky wrote, adding that Budanov "has specialised experience in these areas and sufficient strength to deliver results."

Budanov succeeds Andriy Yermak, who resigned after his home was searched by anti-corruption authorities at the end of November.

Yermak is a longtime confidant of Zelensky and was a central figure in the negotiations with the United States (US) to end the war.
